Every year Pakistan imports over 2 billion dollars worth of edible oil. although the backbone of the country heavily depends on agriculture and very little attention has been given on how to solve Pakistan's future crisis by coming out with new revolutionary ideas. a silent revolution is underway. the farmers in the pothohar valley (Chakwal) are now planting olive trees. not only it will help farmers to make an extra amount of money but it will also save country's billions of dollars every year on the import of edible oil.
The olive tree plantation drive is a campaign of "PAKISTAN AGRICULTURE AND RESEARCH COUNCIL" (PARC), an agricultural research council located in the heart of capital Islamabad. PARC launched a mega flagship programme to develop pothohar into olive valley since 2015-2016. in this project more than 1 million trees have been planted on an area of 800 acres and approximately 750 farmers got the benefit of this project.
Not only the olive tree is a great carbon sinker it will also stop land erosion. experts says that it will also mitigate the effects of climate change.
The potential for olives in Pakistan is great. not only it will put the country on the map of oil and olive exporting country but it also helps local farmers to raise their revenue.
In an interview of Mohammad Bilawal (olive grower) in Chakwal Pakistan, he said that progress in the production of olive is very beneficial and game-changer, especially for Pakistan. initially, we have to wait for 4 to 5 years to get positive results but I am absolutely sure that it is worth waiting.
Just compare Pakistan to Spain which is no doubt the largest producer of olive with an area of approximately 2.4 million hectares under cultivation, and experts say that Pakistan has more than 3.5 million hectares of land suitable of production because of its topography and climate.
Pakistan is already producing olive oil along with several products on the domestic market like pickles, olive jam and olive derived products like olive vinegar, olive syrup, olive sweets and olive tea.
Meanwhile, under a five years plan until 2020, the export of extra virgin (high quality) olive oil could generate significant foreign exchange earnings.
According to the official statistics of the government of Pakistan, the five-year Olive Valley Project is likely to generate revenue of $8.2 million (858 million Pakistani Rupees) in its 9th year, and a cumulative revenue of $373.7 million (39.1 billion Pakistani Rupees) over 25 years.
